Tangmo: a peaceful Hui village preserved by time

, ,

The village of Tangmo is located at the base of the Yellow Mountains, about 30km from the city of Huangshan in the Anhui Province of China.

Founded during the Tang Dynasty (618-907), the village developed steadily during the following dynasties, and it has mostly retained it’s rural character. Unlike Xidi and Honcun, more renowned Hui villages listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site, tourism is not the main economic source of income for Tangmo.

The village has two lakes located near the east entrance. The small West Lake stands next to the smaller East Lake. The lakes were constructed by a rich inhabitant for his old mother, who intended to remind her of the beautiful lakes of Hangzhou.

A small creek runs through the center of Tangmo, with Qing-dynasty houses wrapped around its banks. Strolling along either side gives a perfect view of the traditional dwellings. The village showcases classic Hui architecture found in southern Anhui. More modest and less visited than Xidi and Hongcun, Tangmo has retained a quieter, more authentic way of life.
